This is Volume 1 of a planned two-volume book series from 2019, titled Mental Health Music (acronym “MHM") by the author, pen name WoodTerre, for sharing an original research which the author commence and command as a person of lived experience of mental disorders. The “MHM music selection” includes music chosen by the author base from the author’s own experience which music composition is beneficial to mental health for psychiatric symptoms alleviation and are recommended by the author for ordinary listening by anyone.  A short description of each selected music composition in the “MHM music selection” is provided along with composer’s biographic information tabulated chronologically in summarized form. Each selected music composition provides audio public resource website URLs to author’s suggested performance recordings. A list of non-copyrights sources from which the author compiled biographic information, glossary of terms, and descriptions of each selected music composition provided in the “MHM music selection” is also included.


All the music compositions and performance recordings selection were decided base from the author’s own listening, through music available in public domain from thousands of recordings and hundreds of composers and performing musicians. The “MHM music selection” is the author’s original research and without a priori assumptions about the author’s theories and any other theories related to therapeutic use of music. The “MHM music selection” is not base from any pre-published and pre-compiled third-party index, playlist, chart, critics, commentaries, or other published or unpublished research of any other individuals. The author has not received or solicited recommendations from any source. The author was not a recipient of external influence, advice, or referral from other individuals or organizations, and has no affiliation, association, partnership, membership of any nature to any professional or non-professional companies, health organizations, or educational institutions.

Other than original content from 2022, this first edition includes also a new Author’s Note and adjustments are made to author’s biography, preface, and introduction, and few minor changes in correcting the original content. In this book then, the layout of the book content and content for the main chapters remain the same, albeit some additional pages to make the content presented in a readable book. This First Edition, contains all selection of more than 200 music compositions found in the initial 2022 May release of the same book title, chosen based from the author’s listening experience which music compositions are beneficial to mental health for psychiatric symptoms alleviation, after listening to music from thousands of performance recordings and records. These music pieces are recommended by the author for everyone’s ordinary listening for this reason. The list of 200 plus music works encompass compositions by hundreds of represented composers dating back from the 1600s to the modern era for two music genres to a large extent - namely, classical music ranging from solo instrumental compositions to orchestral works, and film music which the author find comparable to orchestral classical compositions or vocal songs, and theatre and Broadway musical, plus music suggestions in other music genres, from opera and ballet, jazz and blue, Irish and Scottish fiddle and dance, even bluegrass and American and British “Rock ‘n’ Roll”. Each selected music composition provides one or more referrals to the author’s suggested performance recordings and records for readers’ listening choices. For completeness, a short description of each selected composition along with represented composer’s biographic information is tabulated chronologically in summarized form.


Indeed, these music compositions supply the author’s intended mathematical analysis and validation in formulation of the Mental Health MusicTM auditory theory thesis, in essence, a new Science of music, which will appear in Volume 2. Very importantly, the author’s Mental Health MusicTM books present one-of-a-kind groundbreaking research ideas and discourse that will hope to benefit ordinary person as much as any person with lived experience of mental illnesses. The author, WoodTerre, shall wholeheartedly hope readers to henceforth begin this exciting learning journey with Mental Health MusicTM Volume 1 MHM Music Selection. These two-volume books present materials for ordinary readers, as well for musicians, physicians, and scientists.
